A 64-year-old Australian man was recently busted by police for driving his BMW while sitting in a plastic lawn chair. After all, in the land Down Under, you’re not allowed to do pretty much any modifications these days, with hotrods and even Mad Max tribute cars regularly cited, the owners fined hefty amounts.
The state of Massachusetts wants to track how far you drive each year.
But Victoria Police didn’t just slap the guy with a $1,000 fine and that was that. Because the Bimmer had a number of other violations, they took the car. That’s how it’s done on the other side of the world.
Police initially noticed the scofflaw because the BMW had no hood, or what they term a “bonnet” there. In many parts of the US it’s illegal to operate a car without one, although enforcement of that can sometimes be spotty.

After pulling the offender over, police were aghast at the lack of a hood. But when they walked over to the talk to the driver, they immediately noticed something was off about his seat cushion. Since he was sitting in a convertible, they got a nice look at the interior.
It didn’t take long for the cops to realize the driver was sitting on a plastic lawn chair. We doubt the guy even had the foresight to bolt it to the BMW’s frame (that’s a joke – don’t actually do that).
Using a plastic seat of any kind instead of a real car seat that’s bolted in is just plain dumb. The guy wouldn’t even have to get into a crash for the lawn chair to tumble forward, causing him to lose control of the Bimmer.
Also, we’ve seen those things just suddenly crumble for no good reason.
The man apparently admitted to police he knew the car wasn’t roadworthy but was on the way to get some car parts. We hope seats were part of the deal. Considering how much Bimmer parts cost, we can sort of understand why the guy opted to use a lawn chair for a while.
Now he has to pay fines and get his car back, and that’s going to take a bite out of his parts budget.
