Former Superman Dean Cain Says New Superman Movie Made This 1 Brutal Mistake

Former Superman Dean Cain is taking aim at James Gunn’s interpretation of the character in the new film based on the eponymous DC superhero.

In an interview this week, the conservative actor, who starred as the cape-wearing hero on “Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman” from 1993 to 1997, complained that he thinks Gunn has made the character too “woke” due to today’s political climate.

“How woke is Hollywood going to make this character?” he told TMZ in a video clip. “How much is Disney going to change their Snow White? Why are they going to change these characters [to] exist for the times? For Superman, it was ‘truth, justice and the American way.’ Well, they dropped that … They came up with ‘truth, justice and a better tomorrow.’ Changing beloved characters I don’t think is a great idea.”

Cain, who endorsed Trump “100%” in the 2024 election, appeared to be referencing the controversy over Disney’s live-action remake of Snow White. The film, which was released in March, sparked discourse on social media over the casting of Rachel Zegler, a Latina actress, as Snow White as well as adjustments to the story’s narrative and characters, including the seven dwarfs.

“The ‘American way’ is immigrant-friendly, tremendously immigrant-friendly. But there are rules. You can’t come in saying, ‘I want to get rid of all the rules in America, because I want it to be more like Somalia,’” Cain continued. “Well, that doesn’t work, because you had to leave Somalia to come here … it doesn’t make any sense.”

Cain went on to claim that there “have to be limits,” adding, “because we can’t have everybody in the United States. We can’t have everybody, society will fail. So there have to be limits.”

The “Out of Time” star’s comments came after Gunn recently told The Sunday Times that the movie is about an “immigrant” and “basic human kindness.”

“I mean, Superman is the story of America,” Gunn said. “An immigrant that came from other places and populated the country, but for me it is mostly a story that says basic human kindness is a value and is something we have lost.”

The Sunday Times noted that the comic book hero was created in 1933 by Joe Shuster and Jerry Siegel, sons of Jewish immigrants.

Gunn’s remarks caused a stir on social media amid outrage over the Trump administration’s incessant ICE raids and mass deportation of migrants.

Reps for Cain didn’t immediately respond to HuffPost’s request for comment.

Elsewhere in the interview with TMZ, Cain said he was previously “excited” for the film but thinks “it was a mistake” for Gunn to make a “political comment.” He predicted that Gunn’s words would “hurt” the film’s performance at the box office. (Early projections for how ticket sales will perform are divided, Variety reported.)

“I was excited for the film. I’m [still] excited to see what it is, because James Gunn seems to have a sense of humor and the last iterations of Superman didn’t have much humor,” he added, per Deadline. “So I’m rooting for it to be a success, but I don’t like that last political comment.”

Gunn responded to the online backlash, led by MAGA supporters, earlier this week.

The filmmaker brushed off the criticism, telling Variety on Monday, “I think this movie is for everyone. I don’t have anything to say to anybody. I’m not here to judge people. I think this is a movie about kindness, and I think that’s something everyone can relate to.”

“Superman,” which stars David Corenswet, hits theaters tomorrow.
