Scarlett Johansson Surpasses Two Men to Earn the Title of Highest-Grossing Lead Actor

The box office has a new apex predator in Scarlett Johansson. Thanks to the success of Jurassic World: Rebirth, the star is now the highest-grossing lead actor in Hollywood (meaning that, over the course of her career, movies in which she is a lead character or part of the main ensemble have earned more than in anyone else’s career, not that she herself has been paid more than anyone else; she’s still extremely rich though).
Before this past holiday weekend, ScarJo was in third place behind her Avengers costars Robert Downey Jr. and Samuel L. Jackson, according to Entertainment Weekly, but the box-office haul of her new dino pic has catapulted her stat above their lifetime grosses to $14.8 billion…and climbing. Assuming the movie continues to perform well, she could be the first person to cross the $15 billion mark.

Downey Jr. is right behind him and is slated to appear in the next Avengers movies; assuming Rebirth gets sequels, he and Johansson might be handing this title back and forth for the next decade. And since Johansson is 20 years younger than RDJ, has made 10 fewer movies than he has, and is currently out-grossing him…well, nicely done, ma’am.

Would a different release strategy have bumped her up this list even earlier? Honestly, Black Widow wasn’t great, so maybe not. But it certainly seems like ditching that role is working out for her, even if (small Jurassic spoiler ahead) she’s still playing a mercenary, LOL. In other words, New Franchise, Who Dis(ney)?
