TCPalm Breaking News and Visuals Editor Laura Lemmon could be considered a weekend beach bum in Indian River County.

Not necessarily in the ocean (she doesn't like those rip currents), but sitting nice and comfy under an umbrella in a sand chair with a book, magazines, sunscreen, sunglasses and plenty of drinking water.

Or walking the shoreline. Or watching beachgoers walking or sitting nearby. And listening to the waves crash, sending foamy saltwater trickling on the sand.

Q: What is your favorite spot?

A: I enjoy Wabasso Beach Park in Indian River County. It's generally quiet and not too many people, depending on the time of day. Otherwise I head to Golden Sands Beach Park about a mile north, where there's more people and more beach, but I can find a comfortable spot, and more parking.

If I just want to check out the ocean and beach conditions and sip coffee, I'll go to the Conn Beach boardwalk or Sexton Plaza in Vero Beach. If I have visitors with children, we head to South Beach where there's always plenty of sand and a wide beach. In other words, I enjoy all the beaches in Indian River County and Vero Beach!

Q: What do you do there?

A: Relax. Sometimes that's walking the beach. Sometimes it's reading a book sitting under my umbrella after a short dose of direct sunlight. I've got my little cooler of ice with cold water bottles and sunscreen, maybe a snack. I'm always near a lifeguard station, so I feel safe. I even go in the water! Sometimes I see someone I know and strike up a conversation.

Q: What is the cost?

A: The great thing about the beach parks in Vero Beach and Indian River County is they are close by and free. No parking fees, although jostling for a spot at Wabasso Beach Park may come down to figuring out the best time to arrive. There's not a lot of parking there.
