Watch Barkaa And Miss Kaninna On ABC’s ‘That Blackfella Show’

The ABC kicked off NAIDOC Week in style over the weekend with a television special entitled That Blackfella Show. The hour-long variety program has been described in press materials as “a big, blaknight of entertainment”, co-hosted by television veteran Ernie Dingo and ABC News Breakfast host Bridget Brennan, with TikToker and comedian Isaac Compton serving as the show’s “sidekick”. Airing live on Saturday night (July 5th), the show featured several marquee names in Indigenous Australian music – among them Barkaa, Miss Kaninna and Electric Fields – as well as appearances from stand-up comedians such as Steph Tisdell, Dane Simpson and Kevin Kropinyeri.
“I haven’t been this excited about making a show since my high school adaptation of Alice in Wonderland,” said Kelrick Martin – the ABC’s Head Of Indigenous – in a statement. “It’s very different to a lot of Indigenous content on screens at the moment. It’s a one-of-a-kind Indigenous variety show that aspires to connect all Australians— especially as we gear up for NAIDOC Week.”
In addition to the slew of Indigenous performers, That Blackfella Show also featured cameos from some non-Indigenous allies. Media personality Abby Chatfield, for instance, was featured in a pre-recorded sketch that parodied Love Island alongside her real-life partner Adam Hyde of Peking Duk and Keli Holiday, while triple j presenter Concetta Caristo appeared in the sketch I’m A Blackfella, Get Me Out Of Here! and Jimmy Barnes appeared in the Kritiquing With A Koori cooking segment.

Electric Fields performed their song ‘Don’t You Worry’, while Arnhem Land roots-rock group Ripple Effect Band made their television debut with a rendition of an unreleased track entitled ‘Love Song’. Miss Kaninna, meanwhile, performed a cover of the country standard ‘Crystal Chandeliers’ – as popularised by the late Charley Pride in 1965. This also marked Kaninna’s television debut as a performer, with the singer and rapper describing “a lot of emotions” in a social media statement.
“When I was asked to cover ‘Crystal Chandeliers’, I immediately said yes,” she wrote. “I grew up listening to Charley Pride, like so many of us Black fullas, and country music has always had a special place in my heart. I remember my Nan teaching me to line dance in her lounge room with her cowboy hat on in Mooroopna. I remember endless hours of country hits playing on loop in my pop’s car when I would go with him to work as a kid and countless drink-ups with the aunties and uncles singing along to country music. Like most music, country was pioneered by Black people. Charley Pride was the first successful Black country musician and gain notoriety in the mainstream, making him the first Black superstar. It was an honour and a privilege to cover the king of country.”
