Savannah just keeps upping its hotel game. On July 9, Municipal Grand, a new boutique property, opened its doors in the heart of the city’s north Historic District. Like Hotel Bardo, another recent addition to Savannah, Municipal Grand is big on style and designed to attract locals as well as out-of-towners. The hotel’s bold midcentury look is inspired by its six-story 1960s-era building, which once housed the First Federal Savings and Loan Association building.

A First Look At Municipal Grand

From the outside, Municipal Grand’s former life as a bank doesn’t seem that long ago. Which makes the interior, with its striking lobby bar and restaurant, all the more dramatic. Inside Municipal Bar, curving wood banquets and poppy pink chairs frame a large, crescent-shaped bar ringed with sleek, yellow-seated stools. Abstract art and long, columned hanging lights give the large space color and warmth. The effect is equal parts playful and elegant. “Municipal Grand was created with a lively Southern parlor room in mind,” said Ryan Diggins, CEO and partner at Midnight Auteur, the hospitality company behind the hotel.

The all-day menu is available brunch to dinner and will include dishes like seafood towers, croquettes with mortadella and pistachio, and French toast with ricotta and maple butterscotch. Behind the bar, cocktails include classics like a Martini service for two as well as inventive creations like a take on a Sazarac with root beer.

An underground bar below the hotel called The Red Eye will open later this year. Expect a low-lit, moody space that’s made for late nights.

Inside The Rooms

The hotel has 44 rooms ranging from standard queen to king suites. The design is in harmony with the rest of the hotel, with wood-and-velvet headboards, vibrant art, and marble-topped tables. Moroccan tiles, a red marble sink, and gold accents give the bathroom a luxurious look. Some rooms also have seating areas and outdoor patios with lounge furniture. King rooms and suites are ADA compliant.
