PlayStation Plus subscribers signed up for the Extra or Premium tiers of the service can play day one game Sword of the Sea at no additional cost come Tuesday, August 19. It's not often that PlayStation Plus features day one games, but the service has seen a handful of day one releases in 2025, including some rather heavy hitters.
The day one PS Plus games for 2025 have so far included games like the critically-acclaimed first-person puzzler Blue Prince and, most recently, the co-op survival game Abiotic Factor. While PlayStation Plus subscribers shouldn't expect day one Extra games to be a monthly occurrence, the service is on a bit of a streak. June's FBC: Firebreak was followed by Abiotic Factor in July, and now Sword of the Sea is coming to the service in August.

PS Plus Update Adds Underrated Soulslike Game from 2024
The latest update to the PlayStation Plus subscription service adds an underrated Soulslike game form 2024.
Posts 1More specifically, Sword of the Sea will join the PS Plus Extra lineup on Tuesday, August 19 as a day one game. Since everything included with Extra is part of the Premium tier, Premium tier subscribers can look forward to it as well. Sword of the Sea, for the uninitiated, is the latest game by Giant Squid, the studio behind Abzu and The Pathless. In Sword of the Sea, players utilize their unique hoversword to traverse a wasteland that they are hoping to restore. Surfing/skateboarding around with the hoversword will be key to Sword of the Sea's minute-to-minute gameplay, but the game also features combat and platforming elements.
Sword of the Sea is Coming to PS Plus Extra on August 19
CloseWhat really makes Sword of the Sea stand out, though, is its presentation. The game is nothing short of gorgeous, blending beautiful blue oceans with stunning desert landscapes. Based on the Sword of the Sea trailers that have been shown so far, its musical score is also incredibly impressive, and it looks like it's going to be quite comfortably one of the most impressive new game releases of the year. The game is being directed by Journey art director Matt Nava, for those that may be skeptical about just how gorgeous it is.
Sword of the Sea coming to PS Plus Extra on day one ensures that August 19 is going to be a big day for Sony's subscription service, but there's even more to look forward to. August 19 will also mark the day that the other new PS Plus Extra games make their debut, though subscribers won't know for a couple more weeks exactly what's in store. Some games will be leaving PS Plus Extra on August 19 as well, including The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, so subscribers should keep that in mind.
