One of only two 1967 Ford Mustang GT Zagato Elaborazione models ever built was sold this week on Bring a Trailer for just €155,000 (about $170,000 USD)—a figure many enthusiasts consider a bargain for such a unique machine.
The car, a transatlantic collaboration between Ford and famed Milanese coachbuilder Carrozzeria Zagato, represents one of the boldest design experiments of the era. Known for shaping lightweight Alfa Romeos and bespoke Aston Martins, Zagato applied its European design language to America’s iconic pony car, resulting in a Mustang unlike any other on the road.
An Italian Take on Detroit Muscle
Originally delivered as a Wimbledon White Mustang GT, this car was shipped to Italy, where it underwent extensive body modifications under Zagato’s guidance. The transformation included a narrower front grille, rectangular Carello headlights, a redesigned bumper with relocated turn signals, and a subtle bonnet scoop. Finished in Holly Green, the car earned Italian historic certification following a 2019 restoration. Zagato badging on the fenders further sets it apart from its mass-produced American cousins.
Inside, period-correct white bucket seats with black inserts, a classic AM radio, and air conditioning maintain its vintage charm. The odometer shows just 502 kilometers, although actual mileage remains unknown.
Original Power, Proven Heritage
Beneath its distinctive Italian-styled bodywork, the Mustang retains its original 4.7-liter Challenger Special V8 engine, estimated to produce 202 kW (271 horsepower) and 423 Nm of torque, paired with a four-speed manual gearbox. The car has racing pedigree, having participated in the prestigious Mille Miglia in 2021, and it still rides on classic 14-inch steel wheels with whitewall tires.
A Bargain for a Piece of Automotive History
Given its rarity, many expected the GT Zagato Elaborazione to fetch a far higher price. With only two examples ever built, it is among the rarest Mustangs in existence, yet it sold for roughly the cost of a high-quality restomod. For collectors, this auction result underscores a surprising reality: even the rarest pony car in the world can sometimes fly under the radar—at least for now.
