Apparently, GM has an even more potent version of the C8 Corvette that’s wilder than the ZR1X to be revealed soon. Most people just assumed the Corvette ZR1X, which has 1,250-horsepower on tap, can do 0 to 60 in under two seconds, and can polish off the quarter mile in 8 seconds was the ultimate C8 Corvette.
CAFE fuel economy standards are dead.
Not so, claims Corvette chief engineer Tony Roma. He let Top Gear know something even more potent is coming down the line, which is just blowing people’s minds.
“The backbone we’ve built into the C8 is proving to be super capable,” said Roma. “The things we’ve learned from creating the various models so far and the opportunities we have in the future with this chassis are incredible.”
“The ZR1X is not the end of the story, it’s just the latest chapter. The team that works on it has a very ‘what can we do, and how can we do it?’ attitude. They see possibilities and not challenges.”
We’ve been hearing for a long time just how amazingly capable the C8 Corvette platform is. And while the Stingrays have been no pushovers, they just weren’t living up to the hype. Same with the Z06 and E-Ray.
It wasn’t until the ZR1 was revealed in all its glory that we finally felt like GM was delivering on years of hype. Then the ZR1X blew that out of the water. America’s sports car went from a supercar upgrade to a hypercar.
Just what could possibly be next?
Is GM going to take on Koenigsegg and go even more exotic?
Would they try shooting for a production car speed record?
At this point it seems like everything is on the table for consideration. Speculation is running wild, especially since Roma talked about running sub-seven-minute laps on the Nurburgring, among other things.
