After sitting this season out, Sergio Perez is headed back to Formula One as a driver for the new Cadillac team. There’s been plenty of speculation about who Cadillac would recruit in the way of drivers, and we now know the lead.
This Hollywood actor loves driving F1 cars.
Perez was a hot property in the 2023 season as he came in second for the world championship behind Max Verstappen. Red Bull Racing offered him a two-year deal, which he signed last summer.
But when Perez hit a rough patch, his team gave him the boot, signing on Liam Lawson for this season. That was a disaster as Lawson couldn’t hang with the level of competition. Red Bull then tapped Yuki Tsunoda from Racing Bulls for the F1 team.
Now Perez has a chance to prove critics wrong and potentially embarrass his old team while helming a brand new one. Surely the move will come with its own set of challenges, but Perez has the chops to pull it off.
Teams have been lining up to sign the Mexican driver on for the 2026 season, reports autoevolution. While no official announcement has been made, it’s anticipated Cadillac will officially sign on Perez after the Hungarian GP in August.
It’s rumored that for the second driver, Cadillac surprisingly isn’t going with an American. That reportedly isn’t from a lack of trying, but there aren’t exactly F1-competitive drivers falling out of trees.
The two drivers rumored to be in contention for Cadillac are Valterri Bottas ad Mick Schumacher. The former has kept active in the sport after being booted off Sauber’s team at the close of the 2024 season.
Bottas has been a reserve driver for Mercedes this season, but he could sign on with Cadillac soon. But other teams are reportedly interested in him, especially Alpine.
That’s where Schumacher could make his return to F1 after a three year hiatus. He’s been trying to get back into the series while driving for Alpine in the World Endurance Series.
We’ll see how things shake out with the drivers as well as the rest of the Cadillac F1 team.
