Destiny 2 Makes Every Expansion Free to Play For a Limited Time

EllenGames2025-07-092190

Although only a few chapters of Destiny 2's decade-long narrative saga are available to players in 2025, Bungie has made all the game's available expansions free to all players for a limited time ahead of the Edge of Fate DLC launch later this month. It's not unusual for many players less gripped by the game to hesitate to pay for a full-price expansion every year, so this gives such fans the chance to catch up on the most recent parts of Destiny 2's story and witness its dramatic conclusion with last year's The Final Shape expansion.

As a series, Destiny has a surprisingly storied 10-year history, one that spans two games, 12 expansions, and countless smaller updates and seasons that have helped keep the content flowing between the more major releases. Sadly, while the original Destiny and all of its content is still accessible on legacy consoles only, just a handful of the sequel's expansions are playable today. The majority of the story content ever released for Destiny 2 no longer exists, and while many fans agree that the gameplay and underlying mechanics are better today than they ever have been before, the game's continual evolution to this point has come at quite a cost over the years.

As it is at the time of writing in 2025, only the Shadowkeep, Beyond Light, Witch Queen, Lightfall, and Final Shape expansions are available to purchase and play. These expansions chronicle the past five years of story content in the world of Destiny 2, minus the narrative told via the many seasons that were released across that gap of time. From now until July 22, players can play through all five of these expansions for free across all supported platforms – that includes PlayStation, Xbox, and PC, both on Steam and the Epic Games store. What's more, players get to keep all the loot they pick up from the expansions throughout this free event period, be it exotics, currencies, cosmetics, titles, or anything else.

Players Don't Have Long Before Destiny 2's Episodes Are Gone For Good

The three episodes released for Destiny 2 this year are also available for free, but only until July 15, upon which they'll be condemned to the game's content vault just like the many expansions and seasons before them. These episodes present shorter stories and are pretty much indistinguishable from the game's traditional seasonal model, with this episodic content wrapping up a lot of the loose ends presented after The Final Shape.

July 15th kicks off a whole new year, and indeed, a whole new saga for Destiny 2 with the Edge of Fate expansion. Unlike previous years, the game will be seeing two separate expansions throughout 2025, and The Edge of Fate will introduce a new location alongside plenty of new weapons and strange reality-altering powers for players to enjoy.
